Charlie Lake & Beatton River
Charlie Lake is a great option for bird watchers, and is only 10-15 minutes North from St John. Ducks Unlimited and the Charlie Lake Conservation Society together developed the Charlie Lake wetland trails next to the Rotary Park and Jackfish Dundees Pub. These trails have an abundance of water birds during their spring migration period (May and June). Songbirds also frequent both the Charlie Lake and Beatton River trails, so be sure to listen for them!

Watson’s Slough
Watson’s Slough is a 20ha/49ac wetland, and an prime spot for bird watching. Take a leisurely stroll along the Ducks Unlimited trail in Peace River valley as you look out for the wide variety of birds that visit the area. Watson’s Slough is approximately 30 minutes from Fort St. John on Highway 29 towards Hudson’s Hope.
Birds: Buffleheads, Goldeneyes, Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovellers, American Widgeons, Canada Geese, Redwing Blackbirds, Grebes, and more.
The Fort St. John lagoons
5km/3mi East of Fort St. John are the ponds of the lagoons, where many species of water birds spend time at during their spring migration.

Fish Creek Community Forest
Close to Fort St. John is also the Fish Creek Community Forest, where you can enjoy a walk or relaxed hike along the upland aspen forest and coniferous valley. Since birds in this area tend to stay high up in the trees, bird watchers who have a good repertoire of birds songs will have the most luck.

Peace River & Peace Island Park
The Backwaters of Peace River form ponds near the Peace Island Park. This provides an easy bird watching experience, as water birds can be observed while you relaxed on the shores.
