Charlie Lake
Located just minutes from Fort St. John, Charlie Lake is a popular snowmobiling area for local sledders. Explore the trails, cruise on the frozen lake when the ice becomes thick enough, and when you’re done go for a hot drink at the A-Frame club chalet in Montney Park. The Rotary RV Park at the south end of Charlie Park or the Montney Park at the northwest end are both good spots to launch.
The Rocky Mountains
If you’re looking for a remote and pristine wilderness trail, then travel 250km/155.3mi northwest from Fort St. John and discover the Redfern Trail. The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA) is dedicated to sustainably managing interaction between the wilderness and human activity. The Redfern-Keily Provincial Park is also located with the M-KMA, and contains snowmobile trails to excellent wilderness camping areas. There is also a public cabin that can accommodate 6-8 people on a first-come first-serve basis.
Stewart Lake Trail
For a family-friendly snowmobiling trip, head to Stewart Lake Trail. Located at the top of south Taylor Hill, south of the break-check pullout at Mile 30 of the Alaska Highway. There are some steeper hills on the trail, but otherwise it is relatively easy.
Please Note: Winter temperatures average between -18˚C/1˚F and -6˚C/21˚F, and sudden weather change is common. Snowmobilers must supply their own equipment. It is recommended that snowmobilers wear an avalanche beacon, bring a shovel, probe and travel in groups. Snowmobilers should be prepared for a wilderness experience, be aware of snowmobiling safety, and pack accordingly for quickly changing cold weather.
