About Fort St. John

Welcome to the Energetic City!

Fort_St._John_City_Hall-thumbnailWith a young growing population of over 21,000, Fort St. John has come to be known as the Energetic City of British Columbia’s interior.

Established in 1794 as Rocky Mountain Fort, it served as a trading post for the Beaver and Sikanni First Nations as a supply depot for explorations that went further into British Columbia. Fort St. John has gone through 5 locations changes since then, trying to accommodate the fast growing needs of its community. While there is no record of it, Fort St. John is thought to be named when one of the Hudson’s Bay company posts opened on Saint Jean Baptiste Day.

Now fueled by the oil, gas, forestry, agriculture, and tourism industries, Fort St. John has been growing and bustling in recent years. This means that there is always lots happening and to participate in throughout the year.

Fort St. John is nestled among the gentle rolling plains of the river-carved valleys covered in pine, spruce, and aspen forests, make it a unique scenic venture in British Columbia. The Peace River and slopes of the Peace River Valley provide terrain that’s ideal for many outdoor activities, such as camping, fishing, golfing, boating, mountain biking and ATVing during the summer months. When winter rolls in you can enjoy the skiing, sleigh rides, festivals, skating, tobogganing and snowmobiling that becomes available with the fresh snow!

If the weather turns bad, or indoor activities suit you more, then Fort St. John boasts state-of-the-art Recreation Facilities and Theatres that host concerts, trade shows, and tournaments throughout the year! With a strong music community of both local and visiting performers, Fort St. John was named the “Musical Capital of Northern B.C.” in 2009.

At the City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre, the trained and energetic staff are here answer any questions you might have, and keep you updated on events happening throughout the city. The Visitor Centre is open year-round to help both visitors and residents of the Energetic City.

The city of Fort St. John is a quickly growing and expanding community with a diverse culture and strong industry. Fort St. John many modern amenities include 5 theatre cinema, leisure pool, cultural centre and a brand new enerplex which houses two official sized hockey rinks, one of only three indoor speed skating ovals in Canada and an indoor running track. Fort St. John has grown many champions including 3 olympians: Denny Morrison, Michelle Kelly and Linda Johnson Blair.

Families can enjoy the local parks, numerous walking trails, skateboard park and the outdoor water park. There are also many associations and clubs that offer activities and recreation such as curling, yoga, martial arts, music & theatre, dance and much more.
